Safety Comparison

The rear seatbelts optional on the Fusion Hybrid inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The Camry doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

The Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium offers an optional collision warning system, which detects an impending crash through forward mounted sensors and flashes a bright light and sounds a loud, distinctive tone to warn the driver to brake or maneuver immediately to avoid a collision. The system also pre-charges the brakes to begin deceleration more quickly. The Camry doesn't offer a collision warning system.

The Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The Camry doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Camry doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Compared to metal, the Fusion Hybrid’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Toyota Camry has a metal gas tank.

Both the Fusion Hybrid and the Camry have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Fusion Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Camry:

For its top level performance in the IIHS moderate overlap frontal impact, side impact, rear impact, roof-crush crash tests, an “Acceptable” rating in the newer small overlap frontal crash test, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Fusion Hybrid its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2014, a rating granted to only 28 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Camry is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2014.

Warranty Comparison

There are over 3 times as many Ford dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Fusion Hybrid’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Fusion Hybrid gets better fuel mileage than the Camry Hybrid LE (44 city/41 hwy vs. 43 city/39 hwy). The Fusion Hybrid gets better fuel mileage than the Camry Hybrid XLE (44 city/41 hwy vs. 40 city/38 hwy).

The Fusion Hybrid has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Camry doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Fusion Hybrid has larger tires than the Camry (235/50R17 vs. 205/65R16). The Fusion Hybrid S/SE’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Camry (235/50R17 vs. 225/45R18).

The Fusion Hybrid S/SE’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Camry L/LE/Hybrid’s standard 65 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Fusion Hybrid S/SE has standard 17-inch wheels. Smaller 16-inch wheels are standard on the Camry L/LE/Hybrid.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Fusion Hybrid’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Camry doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Fusion Hybrid’s wheelbase is 2.9 inches longer than on the Camry (112.2 inches vs. 109.3 inches).

Chassis Comparison

The Fusion Hybrid uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Camry doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Fusion Hybrid has .4 inches more front headroom, 2.7 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more front hip room and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Camry.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Fusion Hybrid easier. The Fusion Hybrid’s trunk lift-over height is 25 inches, while the Camry’s liftover is 28.2 inches.

To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the Fusion Hybrid’s trunk lid uses concealed beam hinges that don’t intrude into the trunk. The Camry’s useful trunk space is reduced by its intrusive beam hinge.

The Fusion Hybrid’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The Camry Hybrid’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

Ergonomics Comparison

The engine computer on the Fusion Hybrid automatically engages the starter until the car starts with one twist of the key and disables the starter while the engine is running. The Camry’s starter can be accidentally engaged while the engine is running, making a grinding noise and possibly damaging the starter and ring gear.

When three different drivers share the Fusion Hybrid Titanium, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Camry doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Fusion Hybrid Titanium’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Camry doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The power windows standard on both the Fusion Hybrid and the Camry have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Fusion Hybrid is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Camry prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Fusion Hybrid’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Camry’s passenger windows don’t open or close automatically.

If the windows are left down on the Fusion Hybrid the driver can raise them all using the keyless remote; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the Camry can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Fusion Hybrid’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over, or reaching to the back seat. The Camry L doesn’t offer power locks.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium’s exterior keypad. The Camry doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system.

The Fusion Hybrid’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Camry L’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent. The Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Camry LE/SE/XLE’s manually variable intermittent wipers don’t change delay with speed.

The Fusion Hybrid has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. When the ignition turns off, the headlights turn off after a delay timed to allow you to securely get to your front door. The automatic headlight on/off feature is not available on the Camry L.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Camry doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The Fusion Hybrid offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Camry offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Fusion Hybrid Titanium’s optional air conditioned front seats cool the driver and front passenger and help take the sting out of hot leather in Summer. The Camry doesn’t offer air conditioned front seats.

The Fusion Hybrid has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the Camry XLE/Hybrid.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Camry doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

The Fusion Hybrid (except S) offers an optional 115 volt a/c outlet in the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters which can break or get misplaced. The Camry doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Fusion Hybrid SE/Titanium’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Camry doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Fusion Hybrid owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Fusion Hybrid with a number “3” insurance rate while the Camry is rated higher at a number “5” rate.

The Fusion Hybrid will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. Kiplinger’s estimates that the Fusion Hybrid will retain 58% to 59% of its original price after three years, while the Camry only retains 47% to 58%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Fusion Hybrid is less expensive to operate than the Camry because it costs $133 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Fusion Hybrid than the Camry, including $42 less for a water pump, $169 less for a starter, $202 less for fuel injection, $40 less for a fuel pump, $207 less for front struts, $1070 less for a timing belt/chain and $446 less for a power steering pump.

Recommendations Comparison

The Fusion Hybrid was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” in 2010. The Camry hasn’t been picked since 1997.

Motor Trend selected the Fusion Hybrid as their 2010 Car of the Year. The Camry was Car of the Year in 2007.

The Fusion Hybrid was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2010. The Camry hasn’t been picked since 1997.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Fusion Hybrid as the 2010 North American Car of the Year. The Camry has never been chosen.
