Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Audi Q5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X3 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Q5 and the X3 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Reliability Comparison

The Audi Q5’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the X3’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 11th in reliability, above the industry average. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 14th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ April 2017 Auto Issue reports that Audi vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Audi fourth in reliability. BMW is ranked 8th.

Engine Comparison

The Q5’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 4 more horsepower (252 vs. 248) and 15 lbs.-ft. more torque (273 vs. 258) than the X3 xDrive30i’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

For better stopping power the Q5’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the X3:

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Q5 has larger standard tires than the X3 (235/60R18 vs. 225/60R18). The Q5’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the X3 (255/45R20 vs. 245/50R19).

The Q5’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the X3’s optional 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For better maneuverability, the Q5’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the X3 xDrive30i’s (38.4 feet vs. 39.4 feet). The Q5’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the X3 M40i’s (38.4 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Q5 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the X3 (8.2 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Q5 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Q5 has .6 inches more front headroom, .7 inches more front legroom, .1 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, 1.4 inches more rear legroom and .5 inches more rear shoulder room than the X3.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Q5 Premium Plus/Prestige’s cargo door can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The X3 doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its cargo door, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Q5’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The X3’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Q5 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The X3 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Q5 has standard extendable sun visors. The X3 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Q5 Premium Plus/Prestige keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The X3 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
